John Hall & Sarah Bagshaw exhibition

John Hall is a multidisciplinary artist based in Birmingham whose practice explores surface, pattern, and the material language of the city. Alongside his studio practice, he runs the internationally renowned textile design studioAbout Pattern, working with clients including Uniqlo, Philip Lim, and Guy Laroche.

Having studied Fine Art at undergraduate and postgraduate level, John’s work has evolved through sustained investigations into pattern, abstraction, and the physicality of paint. His practice moves fluidly between painting, surface design, and textile thinking, allowing different modes of making to inform and challenge one another.

Sarah Bagshaw is also based in Birmingham, with her current art practice exploring the marks, forms, shapes, patterns, and textures of the everyday urban environment using discarded cardboard packaging as a surface. Drawn to the traces of human presence, both intentional and accidental, her work examines the visual histories embedded within worn surfaces, discarded objects, and the overlooked details of daily life.

Sarah studied a first degree in Fine Art and a Master of Arts in Surface Pattern Design, with design clients including Lush, Anthropologie and 3M. At the heart of her practice is the joy of discovery through play with materials and processes.

John and Sarah come together for this collaborative exhibition through a shared artistic language, drawing on many of the same influences while maintaining distinct individual practices. As part of the exhibition, they will also present a free artist talk on Wednesday 5th August.
