Since 2013 Andy Howlett has been documenting the weird fringes of the everyday with his wry, observational essay films. Taking his camera for walks around Birmingham and the West Midlands, Andy has an eye for the overlooked details and geographical curiosities that tell stories about this under-explored region.
Sometimes alone, sometimes in company, his POV explorations accompanied with his dry, humorous narration reveal the magic to be found through the simple act of going for a walk.

This selection of his short films includes a go-pro mission to walk across a city in a straight line, a sensory journey through Birmingham’s creative destruction, a visit to a Jacobean garden beside the M6, and reflections on walking and connection during the pandemic.

Andy will join us for a Q&A after the screening, so there’ll be a chance to chat with the filmmaker, ask questions and explore some of the stories behind the films.

Bio

Andy Howlett is a Birmingham-based artist, writer and filmmaker interested in the power of collective walking to re-map and re-enchant our public spaces. His walks, writing and films have been commissioned by Flatpack Festival, Ikon Gallery, The Dispatch, Floodgate Press, Historic Coventry, Voce Books, Solihull Council and the Wildlife Trust.
His feature-length essay film Paradise Lost (2021) explores the death of modernism through the demolition of Birmingham Central Library. It’s been shown at architecture film festivals around the world - and at •nook• too, where we had a sold-out screening in August!
Andy is a founding member of Walkspace, a walking-art cooperative whose exhibition has just finished at •nook•, and facilitates its public walking programme.
